Instagram replaces “Impressions” with “Views”: What you need to know

This article explains why Instagram now shows Views instead of Impressions and how that change appears in analytics, reports, and connected data sources.

Why you’re now seeing Views instead of Impressions on Instagram

Instagram changed one of its key metrics. What used to be Impressions is now called Views. If you use the platform, you have probably noticed the update there as well.

Meta says this metric is still in development, so you may notice some inconsistencies in the data, especially if you are promoting posts.

What exactly changed?

Meta announced this change to simplify how content performance is measured.

You can read the official announcement here: Introducing “Views” to Simplify Content Insights – Meta for Creators

What’s changing in the platform?

Starting April 7

  • On accounts, posts, and reels, you will see Views instead of Impressions.

  • To keep your historical data consistent:

  • Before January 1, 2025: you will still see Impressions.

  • From January 1, 2025 onward: you will see Views.

In the analytics dashboard, tooltips show where the switch happens.

In post and reel listings

The data is split into two columns:

  • Organic Views

  • Promoted Impressions

This avoids inaccurate totals when a post has been promoted.

What about Stories?

  • For now, Impressions still appear for Stories.

  • Instagram does not return full view data once a Story expires. The switch to Views will happen once the API supports it properly.

In Looker Studio

  • Impressions will still work, but it will now show the updated View numbers.

  • A new field for Organic Views is also being added.

Why don’t you see Impressions data for previous periods?

Since April 2024, Meta replaced the Impressions metric with Views in its API.

In addition, recent API versions from v22.0 onward no longer allow requests for the impressions metric for any content, even if it was published before the change.

The platform uses v23.0 of Meta’s API, so it cannot retrieve or request the impressions metric for any item.

This means:

  • If you connected your account before April 2024, you will see older impression data because it was already stored.

  • If you connected your account after the change, impression data will appear as 0 because the API no longer returns it.

  • Views data will be available retroactively only as far back as Meta allows in its API calls.

In short, this is not an error. It is a technical limitation of Meta’s API, which no longer allows requests for impressions and limits the available history for views.

Notes

  • In the hashtags table, Impressions will also switch to Views.

  • In the brand summary, a tooltip explains that Instagram Impressions are now shown as Views.
