Character limit for each social network
Character Limits on Social Media
Knowing the character limit for each social media platform is essential to optimize your posts and ensure your message reaches your audience in full. Here’s a summary of the current limits by platform:
Social Network | Character Limit |
|---|---|
16,192 | |
2,200 | |
Threads | 500 |
X (Twitter) | 280 / 25,000 (X Premium) |
Bluesky | 300 |
3,000 | |
800 | |
TikTok | 2,000 (auto) / 2,200 (manual) |
Google Business Profile (GBP) | 1,500 |
YouTube | 5000 |
💡 Remember, you can edit by platform to adapt your content to each platform's limits.
👀 Considerations
On X (formerly Twitter), links always consume 23 characters of the total limit, regardless of the actual URL length.
If you have any type of premium account on X (Twitter), you can post the same character limits allowed natively. Note that if you activate a Premium account, X (Twitter) may take up to 24 hours to reflect the account update in Metricool.
When posting directly on a platform, the character limit might be higher. This is because the limits set by a platform's API (?) are often stricter than those applied natively.
Some emojis, special characters, links, or Unicode character combinations may not be counted exactly the same way by the planner counter and the social network. Because of this, a post can exceed the platform's real text limit even if the counter appears to be within range. This happens more often when the text is very close to the platform's character limit. If this happens, shorten the copy and try again. On Instagram, this kind of rejection may appear as a generic unknown error.
(?) What is an API? It is the access provided by one application (a social network, in this case) to another application (like Metricool or another third-party tool) to interact with its features and data.
